SuomiAreena, the Finnish political festival counterpart to Almedalen (Sweden), Folkemødet (Denmark), and Arendalsuka (Norway), took place in Pori on Finland’s west coast during the last week of June, coinciding with Almedalen. As usual, Rud Pedersen actively supported clients from various sectors, participating in numerous panel discussions, meetings, and conversations, and hosting its own breakfast event.

Rud Pedersen’s own event featured a lively debate on the current state and future of liberal democracy. The discussion highlighted the foundational principles of liberal democracy—political participation, freedom of speech, and the rule of law—and expressed growing concern over these values being increasingly challenged worldwide, particularly due to rising populism. Specific worries were voiced regarding Donald Trump's renewed prominence in the United States and the global decline of democratic norms.

Participants underscored that political shifts alone might not effectively address the significant global challenges humanity faces. This could lead to greater disappointment and erosion of trust in the existing political system. Ultimately, the future of liberal democracy will significantly depend on how well it can respond to everyday concerns and rebuild confidence that society has room for everyone.

Four festival days with distinct themes

In 2025, SuomiAreena structured its four festival days around distinct themes: safety, work-based immigration, health and social systems, and space.

Despite challenging weather conditions, Rud Pedersen closely followed four discussions arranged by Pharma Industry Finland. Key topics included the growth potential of the healthcare sector, treatment availability in Finland, the role of medicines in overall national security, and the implementation of innovations in wellbeing. An essential takeaway was the proposal to count medicines within the recommended NATO guideline of allocating 1.5% of GDP towards defence-related expenditures.

In addition, numerous debates addressed future directions for the social and healthcare systems. For example, an event organized by Rud Pedersen for a client, focused on strategies to restore declining trust in Finland's healthcare. Major insights from this event emphasized the need for improved patient access to primary care, enhanced treatment pathways, and continuity in care provision.

The week’s standout moments included a powerful speech by Julija Navalnaja, widow of the late Russian human rights activist, and a concert by KAJ, the Finnish band that represented Sweden at this year's Eurovision.

The final day, dubbed “Space Day,” featured a keynote speech and panel participation by former NASA astronaut Ron Garan.

SuomiAreena adopted a refreshed concept, with a more international approach, but challenging weather conditions impacted attendance numbers this year. Nevertheless, Rud Pedersen values the quality of discussions and interactions more than the number of participants.

Looking ahead, next year’s SuomiAreena, occurring less than a year before Finland’s parliamentary elections, is expected to attract increased attention from stakeholders and lobbyists, offering yet another compelling reason to participate.
